The Soviets did react to the deep bombings in Egypt, and to the Phantoms that Johnson approved and Nixon supplied, by setting up an array of surface-to-air missiles near the Suez Canal, by manning MIGs to intercept the Phantoms and by installing Scud missile batteries (which were used against the IDF in the Yom Kippur War), but they did not deploy any nuclear weapons ;
