Duke hammers a core tube into the ground until it meets a rock and won’t go any further. Then the hammer flies from his hand and he makes four attempts to pick it up by bending down and leaning to reach for it. He gives up and returns to the rover to get the tongs to pick up the hammer. He tells Houston he thinks he hit a rock and that the core tube won’t go in any further. He asks if he should try driving the tube in at a different location. A member of the Science team on the flight director loop says “Yes” and capcom Tony England relays that to Charlie.
