The Ottoman census of 1878 indicated the following demographics for the three districts that best approximated what later became Mandatory Palestine

Muslim citizens 403,795 86–87% Christian citizens 43,659 9% Jewish citizens 15,011 3% Jewish (foreign-born) Est. 5–10,000 1–2%
