Many Syrians remain unaware that the country’s first parliamentary elections since the fall of Bashar al-Assad are set to take place, as the public has been barred from voting, AP reported on October 4th. Streets in Damascus lacked campaign posters or rallies, and some residents only learned of the vote by chance. “I didn’t know — now by chance I found out there are elections,” said Elias al-Qudsi, a shopkeeper in the old city.

Sunday’s parliamentary vote will not include the general public.
